posted 09/30/2009 A concern has been raised about the spread of the H1N1 virus or Swine Flu that, until now, SECYH has neglected to address. First off, the league will continue to make water bottles available for team practices and games but the league is encouraging all players to bring their own. Ideally it would be unique in appearance with the player's name on it and it should not be used by anyone else. I am asking all coaches and parents to reiterate this message to your players. The following are standard recommendations from the CDC to help prevent the contagion:
- Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand cleaners
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
- Try to avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Stay home if you are sick until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours
Remember, those with compromised immune systems (e.g., asthmatics) are the most at risk. That includes those that may be excessively tired from physical activity. By being aware of the risks and taking some simple precautions, it will go a long way to keeping all of our players healthy throughout the season.
